  • Canva on a computer. The timeline is easier with a mouse.
  • A timer. Twenty minutes. When it rings, post what you have.

The steps

One step open at a time. Click "Done, next" to move on. The grey boxes show what the screen looks like; they are pictures, not buttons.

  1. On the Canva home page, search for Instagram Reel or open house and pick a video template you roughly like. Building from a blank page is where people get stuck. The template already has the words, the timing and the music lined up.

  2. The strip along the bottom of the editor is the timeline. Each block is one clip or photo, in order. The words and stickers sit on the track above the clips. If you see pages instead of a timeline, click the pencil on a page to switch to the video view.

  3. Drag your clips into Uploads. Click a clip in the timeline, click Replace in the toolbar, and choose yours. Or drag yours onto the clip until it snaps in. The timing and the transitions stay.

  4. Drag the ends of a clip to make it shorter. Keep the three seconds that show the thing. To cut a clip in two, click it, then press S.

Change the words on the text track to match your clips. Delete any text you do not need.

  5. Click Elements on the left and look for Audio. Search for "upbeat instrumental" or "calm piano". Music with words fights the words on screen. Drag the track to the audio row at the bottom and trim it to the length of the video.

  6. Click Share, then Download, and choose MP4 Video. Send it to your phone and post it as a Reel from the Instagram app. Canva cannot schedule Reels, so this part is you.

Timer rang? Post what you have. Something out the door beats something perfect in your drafts.

All done, see what to watch for

Watch out for

  1. Twenty minutes, not two hours.

Set the timer before you start. Canva will happily eat an afternoon while you try to make it perfect.

  2. Show one thing.

Plugs in the floor. A fireplace that doubles as a smoker. No address, no price. If people want to know, they will ask, and now you are talking.

  3. Pick one thing and own it.

One local agent films only home gyms, and people think of her when they think about moving. A monthly recap of the best backyards works too.

  4. Practice off camera.

Record two short videos of yourself a day. You do not have to post them. In a week, talking to a phone stops feeling strange.
