Fix Any Image Fast: Magic Layers and the Background Remover
AI hands you one flat picture. A builder sends you a photo with their logo baked in. Your headshot has an office wall behind it. Here is how to make any of them editable in a minute.
The whole play, at a glance
- Put the picture in a designUploads, or an AI result.
- Magic LayersOne flat picture becomes pieces.
- Move, resize, retypeEach piece on its own.
- Background RemoverClean headshots and logos.
- Put it in your colorsBrand tab, Shuffle.
- You walk away withA picture you can actually edit, in about a minute.

What you need
- The picture as a PNG or JPG. Not a PDF. If you only have a PDF, save one page of it as a picture first.
- A paid Canva plan or a brokerage account for the Background Remover. Magic Layers works on every plan, but each use counts against your monthly AI allowance.
- Permission, if the picture is not yours. Brad asked the builder before he used their photo in class.
The stepsPage 2 of 3
The steps
One step open at a time. Click "Done, next" to move on. The grey boxes show what the screen looks like; they are pictures, not buttons.
Open any design, or start a new one. Drag the picture into the Uploads tab, or if Canva AI just made it, click the version you like. Click the picture once so it is selected.
With the picture selected, click Edit in the toolbar above it, then Magic Layers. Give it a moment. When it finishes, the one picture has become a stack of separate pieces: the words, the objects, the background.

Brad calls this his most used tool in Canva. Before it, a flat picture meant starting over.
Edit
Magic LayersBG RemoverAdjust- Click any piece and drag it. Grab a corner to resize it.
- Words come back as real text. Click them and type your own.
- Do not want a piece? Click it and press Delete.
- The Layers panel on the left shows the whole stack if something is hiding behind something else.
A headshot with a wall behind it looks pasted on. A logo with a white box around it looks worse. Click the photo, then BG Remover in the toolbar. One click and the background is gone.

Missed a spot, or lost some hair? Click BG Remover again and use the Erase and Restore brushes to touch it up.

Set a timer for this. Five minutes of fixing is plenty. Hours of fiddling is how designs never get sent.

Watch out for
Magic Layers is for designs, not snapshots.
It works best on flyers, postcards and graphics. On a real photo of a room, the pieces may not come apart cleanly. That is normal.
It counts against your AI allowance.
Every plan gets a monthly number of AI uses. Free accounts get a small number, paid plans get many more. If it says you are out, that is why.
PNG or JPG only, under about 5,000 pixels on the long side.
A PDF will not work. Save the page as a picture first.
Ask before you use someone else's picture.
A builder, a photographer, a stager. Most say yes, and some will help you market the home. Just ask.
